- ➤ Photos show the Duck & Bunny building at 312 Wickenden St. before it was torn down. The historic eatery, known for its distinctive artwork, was later sold to a developer. The Providence Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cranston student Paris Pineyro was awarded the inaugural Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole Scholarship at Berklee to help cover her college education in music business, management, and performance. The $75,000 scholarship honors the legacies of the musicians and supports her studies. 10 WJAR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A judge in Washington D.C. (Monday) ruled to let developers resume work on Revolution Wind, an offshore project nearly 90 percent complete in Narragansett Bay. The decision lets Orsted continue constructing turbines that will power more than 300,000 homes despite a previous work halt. Rhode Island PBS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Thrive Behavioral Services, a Warwick nonprofit, received a corrective order from Rhode Island’s Health and Human Services on Jan. 13 after an audit alleged overbilling and discontinued services that risked children’s safety. The agency mandated that Thrive work with a designated provider + submit corrective measures by Jan. 9. Go Local Prov
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Rhode Island Homeless Advocacy Project held its People’s State of the State rally at the State House before Governor McKee delivered his address. Advocates highlighted the plight of 445 unsheltered residents in extreme winter conditions and urged the state to increase funding for permanent housing. The Boston Globe
- ➤ On Monday, Jan. 19, all federal, state, and municipal offices, including banks, libraries, RMV and post offices, will be closed for MLK Day while only priority mail is delivered (trash pickup may be delayed and ATMs and digital banking remain available). - ➤ Providence home buyers face a tough market after Zillow ranked the city fourth among the ten hottest markets in 2026. Reports show a 1% rise in home values, an average price of $416,930, and nearly half of listings sold above asking price in 2025. The Providence Journal

- ➤ The Exeter-West Greenwich boys basketball team beat Ponaganset 67-58 on Monday night (with standout play by Matt Chartier) after bouncing back from a recent loss; the team will build on its win with a Wednesday game at Paul Cuffee and a Thursday home match. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Villanova beat Providence 88-82 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion on Tuesday, Jan. 13 by scoring on its final five possessions, while the Friars extended their Big East losing streak. The Providence Journal
