  • Providence officials confirmed that a deadly fire on Princeton Avenue on Christmas Day claimed the lives of Emilia Severino and her son Yoel Morales; a GoFundMe supports displaced families while Severino’s other son remains hospitalized.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eureka Day is a satirical comedy now playing at the Gamm Theatre in Warwick until Feb. 1; it follows a school community dealing with a mumps outbreak and vaccine debate in a humor-filled, engaging style.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Two local voices show how to correctly say all 39 towns in the state. Edward Fitzpatrick from Rhode Island Report and North Providence Mayor Charlie Lombardi created an educational video to help listeners avoid mispronouncing Pawtucket.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University will name its soon-to-open indoor turf facility Penner Field House in recognition of a generous gift from the Penner Family Foundation later this month. The 76,000-sqft facility will replace Meister-Kavan Field and offer year-round athletic training and recreation for varsity and club teams.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island law lets you open and keep a package if it is addressed to you, but if it is for someone else or a past resident, you must return it to the post office. Federal rules say tampering with mis-delivered mail may lead to fines or jail time.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Brown University professor and an emergency doctor say that Rhode Island should consolidate hospital inpatient services while keeping essential emergency care at two struggling hospitals. Their plan suggests shifting one hospital to a freestanding emergency department to protect access—this move could help workers and patients amid funding challenges.  The Boston Globe

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Cranston’s Garden City Center announced that two new restaurants will open this year and two more sites will debut next year — offering meals from noodles to bagels to Mexican specialties. The center will host its first local dining options all in one spot.  The Providence Journal
