  • Trucker Brian Evers of Coventry has celebrated 25 years accident-free driving for freight company XPO, covering 2 million miles; he credits careful driving, brief coffee breaks, and plenty of sleep for staying safe on challenging roads.  Rhode Island PBS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Centurion Foundation is asking state officials for an $18 million reserve bond — a step to secure verbal commitments from four investors for acquiring Roger Williams Medical Center and Fatima Hospital, with plans to close the deal by Feb. 28.  10 WJAR
  • Ocean State Labs at 150 Richmond St. is set to host six life science companies, with four moving in on Feb. 2 — the facility has completed final prep — as the hub gears up to support discoveries to commercialization in Providence.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • Three employees and a police officer at Butler Hospital were injured Friday when a patient became violent; union leaders and hospital officials are discussing enhanced staff safety measures following the incident.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Communities across Southern New England are marking MLK Day with volunteer projects and interfaith services. In Providence, Gov. McKee will speak at Ebenezer Baptist Church at 4:00 p.m. today (other celebrations are held in Attleboro and Newport).  10 WJAR
  • Netflix will release the documentary Secret Mall Apartment on Friday. The film (92-minute) tells the story of eight artists who secretly built an apartment in Providence Place Mall between 2003 and 2007 after first premiering at SXSW in 2024 and at the mall in March 2025.  10 WJAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, NOAA noted that a G4 geomagnetic storm made northern lights potentially visible across parts of the country, though partly cloudy skies in Rhode Island might have blocked the view (best time was between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.).  The Providence Journal
  • This week marks 30 years since over 800,000 gallons of home heating oil spilled into Narragansett Bay near Moonstone Beach — NOAA data shows 9 million lobsters, 4 million fish, and over one million pounds of other sea life were lost.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school basketball games this weekend featured comeback wins and strong defensive plays, including Scituate girls’ victory over Putnam Science Academy on Saturday. Boys and girls teams will play more games Monday at various local venues.  The Providence Journal
  • Monday high school basketball games delivered spirited wins with Prout girls (55-45 over Coventry) and Portsmouth boys (76-35 over St. Raphael), led by standout players. Today, multiple matchups are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. across divisions.  The Providence Journal
  • High school girls basketball nominees for Week 5 Longplex Athlete of the Week were announced, with standout performances from Zaida Aponte, Lauren Bousquet, Genesis Castro, Annabelle Lally, and Mackenzie Stone.
