CULTURE NEWS

  • Award-winning musical 'Suffs' is performing at Providence Performing Arts Center through Sunday, showcasing the story of American women fighting for voting rights + cast members share strong bonds that bring history to life.  10 WJAR
  • Rhode Island chefs and restaurants earned a national nod as the James Beard Foundation named local semifinalists yesterday; finalists will be revealed March 31 and winners celebrated in Chicago on June 15.  Rhode Island PBS
  • RI restaurants, bars and chefs from Providence, Newport and South Kingstown are semifinalists for the 2026 James Beard Foundation Awards, with Claudine, Loma and Audette’s chef Jasmine Watson earning national-category nods — the awards will be presented on Monday, June 15 at the Lyric Opera.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University welcomed over 200 new students, including undergraduate transfers and graduate students, on January 20 in preparation for the spring semester that began on January 21. The new arrivals, drawn by Brown's open curriculum and vibrant community, will join the traditional procession at the 263rd Opening Convocation next September.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A heavy winter storm is set to bring 3 inches of snow and icy conditions to Providence and other parts of Rhode Island this weekend. AccuWeather says snowfall will begin slowly on Sunday, Jan. 25 and intensify at night — with cold temperatures expected to linger.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A House Judiciary Committee report released on Wednesday, Jan. 21 accused CVS Health of limiting competition by pressuring local pharmacies to avoid partnering with digital hubs (CVS said the report is misguided). The company's tactics may have violated antitrust laws and could affect one of our largest employers in Woonsocket.  Go Local Prov
  • Providence faces a housing emergency as rising rents leave many residents struggling to afford their homes. A state representative has proposed a rent stabilization plan that would cap increases at 4% per year to offer predictability and relief.  Go Local Prov

HEALTH NEWS

  • Centurion Foundation missed a Jan. 15 deadline for $160M financing to buy Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital and has requested an $18M state reserve fund (which investors have conditionally backed). Without it, Prospect Medical Holdings will close the hospitals on Jan. 30, risking patient care.  The Boston Globe

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction crews are transforming a former East Providence nursing home into 95 income-restricted apartments built by One Neighborhood Builders plus its partners; the two buildings will be ready by January 2027 while funding is sought for a third phase.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Raphael bounced back on Tuesday in Burrillville with a 77-49 win after a 75-35 loss on Monday. The Saints opened with a 27-0 first quarter plus they will host Narragansett on Thursday plus aim for continued success in the state tournament.  The Providence Journal
