- ➤ Aria Grajales (7) helped deliver 200 pounds of food to Northern Rhode Island Food Pantry in Cumberland through a homeschool drive with her mom, Jessica. Her donation spurred more contributions to ease rising needs for local families in the area. 10 WJAR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Heart of Wattayai exhibit at the Museum of Work and Culture in Woonsocket honors Lao history and resilience through photos, heirlooms, and personal stories. The exhibit runs until Feb. 28 (with a free lecture by Vimala Phongsavanh on Jan. 25 from 1:30-3 p.m.). Rhode Island PBS
- ➤ Reading Across Rhode Island has chosen Happy Land by Dolan Perkins Valdez as its 2026 title to spark talks on land rights and history in our community. The statewide program, led by the Rhode Island Center for the Book, will hold local events that bring people together. Rhode Island PBS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At Brown University, five students earned prestigious fellowships on Jan. 22, including three undergraduates, one medical student and one doctoral student as Marshall, Schwarzman and Health Policy Research scholars. Their awards will support studies in medicine + public policy and global affairs. Brown University
- ➤ Brown University's School of Engineering Cafe reopened Tuesday in the renovated Barus and Holley building, serving free coffee and meals to students and staff who gathered to share memories after a December tragedy (notes and flowers marked heartfelt remembrances). The Boston Globe
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Providence and southern New England from Sunday morning through Monday evening, with forecasts predicting 6 to 12 inches of snow and hazardous road conditions on Monday (commutes could be difficult). Go Local Prov
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crook Point Bridge, unused since 1976, remains as discussions between Mayor Brett Smiley and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) continue on a possible transfer of ownership to create a public space for neighbors and visitors. 10 WJAR

- ➤ Local experts urge residents to prepare for winter storms by assembling home kits with flashlights, batteries, blankets, non-perishable food and other essentials, and they recommend keeping car kits stocked with items such as cellphone chargers, extra clothing and a shovel (per National Weather Service guidance).
