CULTURE NEWS

  • Eight local restaurants, bars and chefs have been named semifinalists for the 2026 James Beard Foundation Awards. The list features familiar names and impressive newcomers from Providence, Newport and South Kingstown.  The Providence Journal
  • Secret Mall Apartment is now streaming on Netflix without extra fees—after its run at Showcase Cinemas at Providence Place—and follows local artists who secretly lived in a 750 sqft apartment behind a vending machine; the documentary began streaming Jan. 23.  The Providence Journal
  • CiderCon, the premier global cider conference, will run from Feb. 2 to 5 at the Rhode Island Convention Center, bringing together cider makers, industry professionals and fans for tastings, tours and educational sessions across the city.  Downtown Providence

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University researchers from the Annenberg Institute helped develop a report that recommends updating Rhode Island's 16-year-old K-12 funding formula by increasing state support for busing, building maintenance and special education, with proposed changes expected to guide future legislation.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Providence residents are advised to let both hot and cold water drip this weekend when temperatures are below freezing to prevent pipes from cracking. They should also open sink cabinets for added warmth and know how to shut off their water (avoid using torches to thaw frozen pipes).  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents in Providence are advised to report outages at RIEnergy.com or 1-855-743-1102 when winter storms cause power loss, unplug appliances to avoid surges, and keep homes warm by limiting door openings, sealing drafts (using towels or blankets), and dressing warmly. Use generators only outdoors for safety.  The Providence Journal
  • State health officials and lawmakers are urging changes to pay and training programs to help Rhode Island address its primary care shortage. They propose raising Medicaid rates, expanding training (including family medicine and pediatric residencies), and easing electronic medical record tasks to keep more doctors in the state.  The Boston Globe
  • The Robert E. Rock Senior Center in East Providence is open overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until Jan. 26 for residents lacking heat, and Emmanuel House in Providence offers 24-hour shelter from Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. until Tuesday, Jan. 27 amid an impending winter storm.  The Providence Journal
  • The Rhode Island Department of Health said dozens of East Providence nursing home residents have been relocated after a leak. Officials are checking safety + coordinating care for those affected.  10 WJAR

  • The Patriots are favored for the AFC championship game in Denver Sunday, Jan. 25, after a strong win on Jan. 18, while the Bruins retired Zdeno Chara’s No. 33 at TD Garden and local boys’ basketball teams face tight competition as rankings may shift next week.  The Providence Journal
  • High school basketball games took place Friday, Jan. 23, with standout performances including 26 points by Marron Nerney in girls Division I and 24 by Aidan Clancey in boys Division I. Scores from contests across RI were reported by Journal Hoops Wrap.  The Providence Journal
  • Brown University has elevated its golf and squash teams to varsity status effective this year – a move driven by strong donor backing, championship wins and new facilities that are set to boost competitive success.  Brown University
