- ➤ Doug Lane, honoring the memory of his wife Christine and son Spencer killed in last year's mid-air crash, works with victim families to improve aviation safety + plans a dog park in her memory at Haines Memorial State Park in Barrington. The Providence Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island was named by explorers: Dutch explorer Adrian Block called it 'Roodt Eylandt' for its red clay (another theory suggests Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano linked it to Rhodes). Settled in the 1630s, it became the last of the 13 colonies to join in 1790. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Director Lynne Collinson presents Shelagh Stephenson’s play The Memory of Water at Burbage Theatre Co. (59 Blackstone Ave, Pawtucket) through Feb. 8. - ➤ Heavy snowfall led crews in Cranston to clear sidewalks and roads so that schools could open Tuesday—some districts offered two-hour delays while Providence Public Schools gave a second snow day. 10 WJAR

- ➤ Snow removal crews began clearing Providence streets on Tuesday after heavy snowfall left many roads down to one lane & schools closed. Mayor Smiley said crews will widen streets and the city is preparing for extra snow from a potential weekend storm. The Boston Globe
- ➤ A Rhode Island legislative commission recommended establishing a URI medical school to address the local primary care shortage and boost the local economy. The commission proposed $20m in seed funding for fiscal 2027 + recurring annual support from 2029. The Boston Globe

- ➤ The Providence Board of Contract and Supply is recommending Richard Gavranich and Mark Albert’s $1.5 million bid to convert the old Humboldt Fire Station into three residential units and secure storage for their classic car collection, with completion planned by summer.
