COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ As cold weather approaches, the state has set up four emergency winter pop-up sites. Three church-run sites in Providence (operating nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until Feb. 2) and West Warwick Civic Center (open nightly from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. until Jan. 30) offer warmth. 10 WJAR
- ➤ Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island builds one-to-one mentoring ties to help over 2,500 youth and families improve academic and personal growth. The organization is expanding funding and recruiting more male mentors in the community while launching its new Little Brotherhood program. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Three days after a winter storm, many Providence neighborhoods still face snow packed streets that block parking and sidewalks (311 calls overwhelmed the service). City crews worked for 36 hours and will continue clearing side streets while residents and local business owners await improved conditions before more snow this weekend. 10 WJAR
- ➤ Doug Lane, whose wife and son died in a plane crash last year, leads Families of Flight 5342 in pushing for safer air travel + naming a local dog park after his wife. His group met with lawmakers to advance the ROTOR Act for improved aviation safety. The Boston Globe
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brown University shared results from a federally mandated survey showing most students feel they belong, though many from certain groups report feeling less protected and less comfortable reporting discrimination. The campus plans to expand non-discrimination training and will conduct an employee survey in the fall (pending further review). The Boston Globe

- ➤ Governor McKee’s AI Task Force will release an action plan today at 3:30 p.m. at Rhode Island College outlining how AI will be used as public infrastructure in schools, hospitals, finance, defense, maritime, state government (and small businesses) to boost industry growth. The Boston Globe

- ➤ Providence residents can join Orangetheory Fitness for a $2 per day membership deal available until Saturday, Jan. 31. The gym offers full-body workouts + cardio training with expert coaching for all fitness levels. The Providence Journal

- ➤ Providence Friars fell 87-81 to No. 2 UConn on Jan. 27 at Gampel Pavilion. The loss, driven by a late steal and dunk by Tarris Reed Jr., drops the Friars to 2-8 and marks a three-game losing streak (local fans watched nervously). The Providence Journal
- ➤ The Rhode Island men’s basketball team came from behind to force overtime and win 81-76 in their Atlantic 10 conference game against Dayton on Tuesday.
