ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Responders found a man unresponsive on a downtown sidewalk near Washington Street early Wednesday morning when freezing temperatures hit + state agencies and community groups expanded warming centers to help protect others from the cold.  Rhode Island PBS

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Steel Yard in Olneyville has long been a center for metal art and creative classes - hosting events like the Halloween Iron Pour and offering space for community art projects that continue to shape the local art scene.  The Providence Journal
  • Balliamo Dance Collective will perform concerts at Westminster Unitarian Church in East Greenwich on Saturday, Jan. 31 (3:00 p.m.) and Sunday, Feb. 1. The shows will feature local dancers including NAN0 and Buoy Band, bringing together community artists to celebrate diverse dance forms.  Rhode Island PBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University invested $3 million in workforce development by awarding two $1.5 million grants to CCRI and Building Futures. The funding will support a bilingual certificate program for early childhood educators and apprenticeships in construction & more, with an open call for future grant proposals.  Brown University
  • Brown University is working with Teneo – a global consulting firm – to engage campus stakeholders and Providence neighbors in two external reviews of safety practices following the events on Dec. 13. The reviews will gather input via interviews, listening sessions and surveys during the spring semester.  Brown University

  • Rhode Island Energy president Greg Cornett calls for a smarter energy policy that balances reliability and affordability by reducing customer-funded subsidies and streamlining renewable programs so households and businesses can see immediate savings and long-term benefits.  The Boston Globe
  • Forecasters are tracking a coastal storm that may bring snow, gusty winds, and flooding to the Providence area on Sunday. Updated forecasts indicate a 60% chance of snowfall and city officials are coordinating with vendors to haul excess snow from earlier storms to a vacant lot (owned by the city).  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Attorney General’s office began reviewing health care mergers on Jan. 29 to check market concentration and rising costs — the new rule requires practice groups to notify the office if ownership includes private equity or if they have eight or more providers.  The Providence Journal
