BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Providence Journal invites nominations for any Rhode Island employer with 35 or more employees to be recognized as a Top Workplace—nominations are due by March 27 and awards will be given in October.  The Providence Journal
  • CAVA opened its new restaurant in Cranston at 2 Chapel View Boulevard on Friday. The Mediterranean fast-casual chain (which raised funds for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank) will serve guests from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trinity Rep launches The Roommate, a dark comedy about middle-age women, which runs Jan. 28 to March 19 in rotating repertory with Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale (Feb. 12 to March 22). Artistic director Curt Columbus will leave the theater in the fall to pursue new creative projects.  The Boston Globe
  • The Providence Journal, Newport Daily News & USA TODAY are inviting Rhode Islanders to nominate influential local women for the USA 250 project, asking for written entries or short videos to build a list honoring figures like Anne Hutchinson and Ann Franklin.  The Providence Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rhode Island is boosting its economy by attracting ocean technology companies that develop products for defense and commerce. Companies such as Havok AI, Vatn, Jaia Robotics, and Anduril are setting up operations near Narragansett Bay—supporting 36,000 jobs—while leveraging local research to train workers.  The Boston Globe

  • Residents in a Providence high-rise face limited heat and hot water as management repairs a faulty boiler until Feb. 6 — Councilor Roias delivered letters urging residents to share concerns at a Feb. 9 meeting at the DaVinci Center.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Health reprimanded podiatrist Stephen Rogers on Friday, Jan. 30 for failing to document opioid prescriptions as required by law and extending treatments beyond his scope, imposing a fee of $1,110 + mandating controlled substances training.  Go Local Prov

SPORTS NEWS

  • Barrington finished a Division I boys basketball game with a 54-49 win over Bishop Hendricken at Pepin Gymnasium Friday night — Caleb Satisfield scored 18 points and made a key layup in the final 20 seconds to secure the win.  The Providence Journal
  • Friday's high school basketball wrap showed scores and standout plays from Division I, II and III contests, including North Smithfield’s 77-60 win. Today's and Sunday's schedules list local games at set times (e.g., 1:30 p.m.) for community teams.  The Providence Journal
