CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ In 1778, Rhode Island law freed enslaved African-American and Indigenous men who served in the 1st Rhode Island Regiment (often called the Black Regiment), making it one of the first racially integrated military units; the unit fought in key battles such as Rhode Island and Yorktown. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ One week after more than a foot of snow fell, Providence residents still face parking problems as slow removal impedes travel. Mayor Smiley announced that overnight permit holders in Wards One, Two & Three must park on the odd side to enable trash and recycling pickups on the even side. 10 WJAR
- ➤ Residents on the East Side (Wards 1, 2, and 3) must park on odd-numbered sides starting at 12:01 a.m. today; the eight‑hour ban will let large trash trucks clear snow-delayed pickups before ending at 8 a.m. The Providence Journal
