COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rhode Island is abuzz this February with a range of events from culinary classes and art workshops to festivals and community gatherings in Providence and nearby towns. Organizers urge checking reservations and schedules to enjoy all the wintry fun available.  Downtown Providence
  • Community Libraries of Providence host free events for kids and adults in February, including a kazoo workshop at Fox Point Library on Feb. 3, tufting classes at Mount Pleasant Library on Feb. 14 and 28, and film screenings at Mount Pleasant Library beginning Feb. 20.  Rhode Island PBS

CULTURE NEWS

  • In 1778, Rhode Island law freed enslaved African-American and Indigenous men who served in the 1st Rhode Island Regiment (often called the Black Regiment), making it one of the first racially integrated military units; the unit fought in key battles such as Rhode Island and Yorktown.  Downtown Providence

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • One week after more than a foot of snow fell, Providence residents still face parking problems as slow removal impedes travel. Mayor Smiley announced that overnight permit holders in Wards One, Two & Three must park on the odd side to enable trash and recycling pickups on the even side.  10 WJAR
  • Residents on the East Side (Wards 1, 2, and 3) must park on odd-numbered sides starting at 12:01 a.m. today; the eight‑hour ban will let large trash trucks clear snow-delayed pickups before ending at 8 a.m.  The Providence Journal
