BUSINESS NEWS

  • DoorDash offered 50% off orders in New England yesterday as part of its Big Beef campaign with 50 Cent after the Patriots' Super Bowl loss. The promotion used promo code BEEF50 at participating restaurants and capped the discount at $10, with fees, taxes, and gratuity still applying.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • A six-planet alignment will light up nights from Feb. 20 through early March, with peak viewing after dusk on Feb. 28 when Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune appear together in the sky near Providence.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University (a Providence institution) launched SustainableED to study how climate change disrupts schools and how they may lower emissions and teach climate science, as over 9 million students saw school disruptions last year.  The Public's Radio
  • The Brown Corporation approved FY27 tuition and fee changes—including a 4.25% increase for undergraduates and new salary pools for employees—on Feb. 7, and it elected Brown alumnus Dr. Jeffrey F. Hines as secretary, with changes effective July 1.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by the University of Rhode Island and 5 Gyres Institute shows that Narragansett Bay has collected an estimated 2,500 to 3,300 tons of microplastics since the 1940s. Sediment cores (from near Providence to offshore) reveal urban runoff and shoreline changes boosting plastic buildup in the bay.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Brown University study from Feb. 6 found that Medicare’s three-day rule forces hospitals to keep patients for extra days without boosting care, using over 600,000 cases from 2023 for its analysis. The report indicates the outdated policy may lead to more complications (such as infections) and a strain on hospital capacity.  Brown University
  • A study published Monday from Brown University found that older adults who spent about two hourly sessions on a computer spotting flashing objects had a 25% lower risk of dementia 20 years later—researchers say the speed training may boost procedural learning to keep brains sharp.  The Boston Globe

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The I-195 Redevelopment District Commission has reopened bidding for two parcels on Pike and Tockwotton streets after rejecting previous plans, and it is inviting developers to submit new proposals that may start construction within a year.  The Providence Journal
  • Studies show that rent stabilization helps renters stay longer + keeps rent spikes in check without slowing new building projects, countering critics' simplified views. A proposed plan for Providence would use these rules to ease rising rental costs while exempting new units for several years.  The Boston Globe
