  • Providence prepares for summer's 2026 World Cup as Mayor Brett Smiley said the city will host fan zones and offer lower hotel rates to attract soccer fans, while Bryant University (in Smithfield) will serve as a training base for an undisclosed team and local businesses plan related events.  The Boston Globe
  • RI Energy responded to a gas emergency outside Roger Williams Medical Center Friday afternoon (Feb. 13) near the facility in Providence.  Downtown Providence
  • Rescuers from the RISPCA and Woonsocket Animal Control saved up to 100 cats from a local home on Friday, Feb. 13 and are caring for the cats at the Amaral Street shelter (which provides vaccines, medical care, and food) until further notice, while requesting donations to support their ongoing care.  10 WJAR

  • Providence police said Wednesday that a homeless mother, 75, and her son, 49, were found dead in a Kia sedan in The Miriam Hospital parking lot after a severe cold snap hit the area + officers urge residents to check on vulnerable neighbors and connect them with available resources.  The Boston Globe

  • The Providence Sunday Journal highlighted Nicks on Broadway as one of 39 Restaurants of the Year by USA TODAY today, spotlighting the vibrant local dining scene. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Falls High School is newly built with a $110 million investment featuring 120,000 sqft, updated safety features, multilingual signage (English, Spanish, and Portuguese), and athletic spaces. The state-of-the-art facility will open on Feb. 24 to serve the city’s diverse student body.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lt. Gov Sabina Matos seeks to change deed rules that block grocery stores from opening in vacant spaces+ her proposal aims to lessen food deserts and revitalize local neighborhoods.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence was built on the ideas of freedom when Roger Williams founded a town that welcomed different beliefs. Today local leaders urge government to renew a strong commitment to free speech and fair rights for all residents.  The Boston Globe
  • Providence's Neutaconkanut Hill Park is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 85-acre park sits 296 feet above sea level and includes landmarks such as farm ruins and a monument — its ties to Roger Williams add to its local heritage.  The Providence Journal

  • On Friday, Feb. 13, RIDOH reprimanded two physicians for unsafe practices: Leena Davis for not securing a sharps container & delaying bloodborne pathogen tests after a toddler injury, and Dr. Willy Alfredo Salas Sanchez for not properly evaluating patient pain before prescribing Tramadol.  Go Local Prov
  • Open Doors is piloting free weekly GLP+1 injections for 18 women in addiction recovery in Providence, aiming to reduce cravings for alcohol and drugs.
