CULTURE NEWS

  • Curt Columbus, Trinity Rep’s artistic director, is stepping down at the end of the season after 20 years. His final play, The Roommate, runs through March 19 and he plans a third act to focus on a community-centered approach to theater.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island Energy warned residents Sunday about 100,000 to 150,000 outages expected from a powerful blizzard with heavy, wet snow and 60 mph winds, and said crews will work through several days to restore power starting with high-load areas. Warming centers are ready for those who may lose heat.  The Providence Journal
  • The Rhode Island Family Court trial continues as grandparents seek visitation rights with 4-year-old Laila despite her father's $300,000 legal battle to control access. The trial, which resumed this week, spotlights a long-running debate over parental rights & the role of extended family.  The Boston Globe

  • Providence College Hockey Friars swept Vermont in Burlington over the weekend, winning 5-2 and 5-3 to notch their 20th and 21st victories and mark Coach Nate Leaman’s 9th twenty-win season — reinforcing their lead in Hockey East.  Go Local Prov
  • Providence College's men's basketball team recovered from a recent controversy and beat DePaul 71-68 in Chicago (improving to 12-15). They will host Xavier University at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at home.  Go Local Prov
