COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rhode Island Energy's online outage map was down Monday, Feb. 23, affecting 39,362 customers who lost power; users were advised to report outages by calling the contact center (1-855-743-1101). Crews remain ready to repair the issue as soon as conditions are safe.  Go Local Prov

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Science teacher Julie Maruska, honored as Rhode Island Elementary STEAM Educator of the Year, says supportive charter schools help retain teachers by offering flexible planning and trust.   • Brown professor James W. Head III is working with 18 Artemis astronauts to prepare the historic lunar mission — using over 50 years of space flight expertise to finalize landing plans near the moon’s south circumpolar region.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Warwick, a Family Court judge will decide this week if retired doctors can visit their granddaughter despite her father's objections, as the trial (ongoing since October 2025) continues. The case may extend until March 9 and highlights a deep family dispute over visitation rights.  The Boston Globe
  • Providence trash pickup is delayed two days after a record blizzard as crews focus on clearing emergency and major routes. Residents will see weekday pickups shifted (Monday moves to Wednesday, Tuesday to Thursday) and next week will have a one-day delay, so please check the updated schedule.  The Providence Journal
  • Gov. McKee issued a state of emergency and travel ban ahead of Monday’s blizzard—downtown Providence was nearly empty as the storm hit.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence officials towed 316 vehicles and issued 1,273 parking tickets since Sunday, Feb. 22, as heavy snowfall and whiteout conditions left about 20 vehicles stranded. The travel ban remains in effect today while crews work to clear the streets.  The Providence Journal

  • Bristol resident Dvora Louria is staying at Newport’s Marriott Hotel as a blizzard threatens safe travel ahead of her induction on Thursday at the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center — her insurance advised the move following community efforts that kept the center open another year.  The Providence Journal
