COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brown University students, faculty and staff are showing appreciation to local Providence businesses and leaders through the Brown Loves Providence initiative that began on Feb. 19, 2026 by delivering gift bags, handwritten notes + tokens as part of a coordinated effort to thank the city.   • Brown University was hit by a record blizzard on Feb. 23 that dropped 37.9 inches of snow — breaking the long-standing 1978 record — and forced campus offices to close until Feb. 24; after the storm, students enjoyed the winter wonderland by building snow sculptures.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city canceled trash and recycling pickup this week due to deep snow blocking safe access, and service will restart Monday, March 2. Overflow trash bags are available today at city hall in room 101 and at the Public Works facility at 75 Chapman St.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence side streets remain unplowed after a heavy snowfall as residents clear snow (including those with medical needs) while the mayor said additional heavy equipment will help clear roads throughout the week.  10 WJAR
  • Snow removal crews from Vermont arrived Wednesday to help with blizzard cleanup in Cranston — equipment is stored at 2500 Plainfield Pike while state and local teams deploy it to serve residents. Gov. Dan McKee said additional crews from Pennsylvania are expected to assist as DOT capacity remains full.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown University researchers will lead a five-year ARPA-H-funded study to test if Censavudine can reduce retrotransposon-triggered inflammation and help older adults stay healthier, with animal trials followed by a randomized study enrolling adults age 60 to 65 + measuring physical and cognitive improvements.  Brown University
  • On Feb. 24, 2026, during a blizzard, doctors at Women & Infants Hospital delivered babies by hiking and skiing through heavy snow in Providence. They worked with teamwork plus courage to meet the needs of newborns and mothers.  The Providence Journal

  • Providence defeated Xavier 94-84 on Feb. 25, with Jaylin Sellers scoring 27 points to lift the team in a game delayed by a blizzard. The Friars — winning their fourth in six games — ended a recent losing streak at Amica Mutual Pavilion.  The Providence Journal
  • After a 72 to 46 loss to Richmond on Feb. 25, URI women's basketball can win only a share of the Atlantic 10 title if they beat George Washington on Feb. 28 at home.  The Providence Journal
