COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A fire destroyed Brad’s near Providence College on March 6 with no injuries reported, leaving the historic, well-loved bar a total loss as owners plan to rebuild using community donations. The longstanding bar, founded in 1937 as a shared space for locals and students, will be rebuilt.  The Boston Globe

  • Dunkin’ closed its third-floor spot at Providence Place on Monday, March 9, following other departures from the mall, as the property under receivership and up for sale sees changes in its retail mix.  10 WJAR
  • Dunkin’ at Providence Place Mall closed recently as part of regular tenant changes (the mall is in receivership), and Sarah Dell said new stores like AFTR and a renovated Foot Locker show a focus on improving visitor experience.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brown University is preserving flowers left as memorials after the Dec. 13 tragedy (the pressed specimens are stored at the university herbarium) to honor lives lost and document a pivotal moment in campus history.  Brown University

  • Students from Brown’s Astronomy Club and an introductory astronomy class gathered at the Barus and Holley building rooftop on Tuesday, Mar. 3 to capture images of a total lunar eclipse using observatory telescopes — a rare chance to witness the only total eclipse this year under clear skies.  Brown University
  • Steve Maurano is stepping down as associate vice president for government relations, public affairs, and media relations at Providence College at the end of this academic year. He will continue to teach a public relations course after a 14-year tenure.  Go Local Prov

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the Rhode Island Life Science Hub, the board chose interim director Lilia Holt on Monday after chief executive Mark Turco resigned; the agency will soon start a search for a permanent leader as funds run low.  The Boston Globe
  • A Providence resident (via Instagram account 401bam) challenged Mayor Smiley to a hopscotch match to spotlight deep potholes and call for improved street repairs. The stunt reflects local frustrations with road conditions.  Go Local Prov

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown University Professor Allan Just is working on a new model using satellite data to measure local temperatures more accurately so researchers can study how heat waves affect health. His work will help future studies pinpoint heat risks for vulnerable communities.  The Public's Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Since URI hired Coach Archie Miller in March 2022, men's basketball attendance at the Ryan Center has dropped 25% from 5,158 to 3,849, with many games drawing less than half of the arena's capacity. Lower attendance has cut ticket sales and concession revenue, and officials are projecting adjustments to future budgets.  Go Local Prov
  • Providence College hockey ended its regular season with a 3-1 win over UConn at Schneider on Saturday, capped by a late empty-net goal. The Friars have a first-round bye in the Hockey East tournament and will play on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. & advance in postseason play.  Go Local Prov
  • La Salle boys hockey celebrated a win over Smithfield in a recent game, boosting team spirit and rallying local fans on the ice.  The Providence Journal
  • Mt. Hope and Barrington will face off in a boys’ basketball quarterfinal game on Wednesday night at Barrington High School’s gymnasium, with the winner set to earn a trip to the Ryan Center for a state title opportunity.  The Providence Journal
