COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed that between July 2024 and July 2025, 1,551 more residents left than entered while births and international migration added 4,106 new people, growing the overall population.   • Woonsocket High School locked student phones in Yondr pouches on Wednesday, Mar. 11 to curb recurring fights. Students who refused to comply were sent home as school leaders implemented the new rule after months of discussion.  10 WJAR
  • Today, Reach Out and Read RI is spotlighted by The Providence Journal and United Way for boosting early literacy; the nonprofit partners with nearly 70 pediatric sites to distribute a new book during well-child visits so families can read aloud from birth (helping children enter school ready to learn).  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pawtucket City Council denied a wholesale junk license for a new metals recycling facility near Chelo's on Concord Street after residents and business owners raised concerns about increased truck traffic, noise, and environmental impact, and representatives from Allied Recycling Inc. said they might challenge the decision.  10 WJAR
  • Providence and North Providence officials say a hospital deal left the cities with an 11 million+ gap in back taxes as CharterCARE agreed to pay only part in 17 installments starting Oct. 1, meaning Providence faces a 6.57 million hit and North Providence will lose about 4 million annually.  Go Local Prov

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at Brown University have shown that electrical stimulation may restore movement and sensory feedback for spinal cord injury patients. Participants used a device called the DJ board to tailor stimulation during treadmill walking & reported improved coordination without device-related issues.  Brown University
  • The Rhode Island Department of Health disciplined four nursing assistants for unprofessional conduct at assisted living facilities. Three were reprimanded for striking a patient, using disrespectful language and a medication error — while one was placed on probation for improper feeding techniques.  Go Local Prov
  • Brown University Professor Allan Just is developing a new method using satellite data to measure temperatures at the building level in neighborhoods. This approach allows health researchers to better study extreme heat’s effects, including heart attacks + strokes, and will help improve health responses for vulnerable communities.  Brown University

  • Providence will face St. John’s today in the Big East Tournament at noon. Officials plan to remain alert after a fight marred their last meeting at Amica Mutual Pavilion — an incident that led to several ejections.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence played Butler in the Big East Tournament opening round on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at Madison Square Garden at 4 p.m. The game was shown on NBCSN and Peacock and available on WPRO radio.  The Providence Journal
  • Colin Dorgan scored a double-overtime winning goal that advanced BVS hockey into a Division II semifinal against Portsmouth, earning the team a berth in the title game.  The Providence Journal
