CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ At the Islamic Center of Providence, congregants broke their fast on March 7 by starting with dates, water, and coffee before enjoying a Pakistani iftar meal, a practice rooted in traditions recorded in the Hadith — a global custom embraced by members from diverse backgrounds including those from Mecca and Jordan. The center continues to host community iftars throughout Ramadan to unite its members in a shared celebration of heritage. The Boston Globe
- ➤ Artist Michael Townsend returned to the secret 750 square foot apartment he and other artists built inside Providence Place Mall from 2003 to 2007 after receiving a pardon from mall officials, and the documentary Secret Mall Apartment opens on March 21 to show how they transformed the hidden space (he had been banned for life before his return). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition shows that Rhode Island now has only 47 affordable rental homes for every 100 households with very low incomes—a steep drop from 74 in 2023. With many renters spending most of their pay on housing and more people without a home, state leaders and advocates plan to push new bills and rental subsidies to help ease the crisis. - ➤ The Providence City Council Finance Committee approved a resolution on Thursday asking lawmakers to remove the cap on tax increases and let the city raise taxes by 8%—the move comes as the city faces an $85 million shortfall over the next five years—and the full Council will vote on it on March 20. - ➤ A Providence doctor from Brown Medicine and Rhode Island Hospital was stopped from re-entering the U.S. at Logan International Airport on Thursday evening after visiting her parents in Lebanon. Her lawyer said she holds a valid H-1B visa through mid-2027—efforts are underway to prevent her deportation. The Boston Globe
- ➤ Representative Samuel Azzinaro introduced a bill that would raise public records search fees from $15 to $25 and allow officials to refuse new requests if previous fees remain unpaid—critics warn that the measure could limit access to government information while Senate Finance Committee Chairman Louis DiPalma plans to unveil an alternative reform by the end of March. - ➤ Governor McKee chose Dr. Reuter, a foot doctor who worked on the Barrington Harbor Commission, to join the Coastal Resources Management Council as critics say the volunteer board should be run by experts. - ➤ Four JWU wrestlers—Joziah Fry, Hayden Brown, Adolfo Betancur, and Dylan Harr—earned All-American honors on day one of the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships at the Amica Mutual Pavilion, and the Wildcats now lead with 49.5 points heading into the final day. ABC 6
- ➤ Rhode Island FC signed key players with multiyear contract extensions as they get ready for their second season at Tidewater Landing—where the new stadium will open on May 3 after last week’s open practice was held without it.
