CRIME NEWS

  • Providence Police arrested a man and a woman after a stabbing on Edgemere Avenue Wednesday morning (the woman allegedly stabbed a victim and the man pulled a knife before fleeing).  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Providence Culinary Collective (March 27 to March 30) will host food and drink events that include a beer garden with local breweries, wine dinners and a free vendor event with live music. The sponsoring group (Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau) said the events will offer diverse dining options ranging from budget-friendly pop-ups to upscale experiences.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island lawmakers are considering a bill to regulate cryptocurrency kiosks after residents lost over $2 million to scams, including a Brown University professor who lost $2,200 on April 16, 2024. The proposal would require licensing, transaction limits and refunds for fraudulent transactions and has led to a compromise with industry leaders before a Senate hearing.  The Providence Journal
  • A Rhode Island doctor with a valid work visa was deported at Logan International Airport after returning from Lebanon while her attorneys fight for her return and immigration experts advise visa holders to avoid travel using caution. Brown University also urged international students to postpone trips amid tightening immigration policies.  10 WJAR
  • House Minority Leader Mike Chippendale said he was denied a complete cost breakdown for the Echo Village pallet shelter project and was charged $495 for records he is entitled to receive—he accused Gov. McKee’s administration of hiding key spending details. He scheduled a 1 p.m. press conference to demand transparency and bipartisan accountability in government.  The Providence Journal
  • A YouGov poll of 602 registered Rhode Island voters for Neighbors Welcome revealed that 87% support building more homes near business and shopping districts while 78% said there are not enough affordable homes. Lawmakers plan to propose bills that would allow construction on smaller lots in mixed-use areas—turning aging strip malls into new housing zones.  The Providence Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition finds that only 47 affordable and available rental units exist for every 100 very low-income residents, meaning 53% do not have proper subsidized housing. The report shows the shortage has worsened since the pandemic—forcing the state to need 25,000 more income-restricted units to help control rising rents.  The Providence Journal
