BUSINESS NEWS

  • For nearly three years, Entrepreneurship for All Rhode Island has helped launch 31 local businesses with over $77,000 in seed funding by providing free bilingual training and mentorship to underserved entrepreneurs — executive director Laura Guillen said the organization will work to boost its 12-week accelerator program by at least 10 percent.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • After a 70-hour investigation, police in Cranston found a missing nonverbal woman with autism alive inside a parked car on Sunday—she was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and her caregiver was arrested for abuse and neglect.  The Boston Globe
  • Family members of nonverbal Linda DaLomba confronted caregiver Roberta Gerard after her court appearance Monday as the woman was found safe after being missing for 70 hours—Gerard now faces charges of abuse and neglect including a felony for exploiting an adult.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, WPRI Channel 12 celebrates its 70th birthday with a week of stories that revisit its seven decades of news and local history. The station has digitized old tapes and will show classic clips + share interviews with longtime anchors to honor its journey.  The Boston Globe

  • At a large Match Day event on March 21, Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School placed 142 medical students into residency programs after four years of study—students opened red envelopes amid cheers from family and faculty. The occasion marked the end of a rigorous application process and the start of clinical training for the new residents.  Brown University

  • Researchers at Brown University used a new model to reconstruct Meltwater Pulse 1a—a sudden sea level rise of up to 65 feet that began with modest melting over North America and then spread to Europe, Asia, and West Antarctica—with the goal of improving future sea level predictions as ice sheets melt today.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than one year after the westbound Washington Bridge was shut down in December due to broken anchor rods, state Rep. June Speakman and lawmakers say key questions about the incident still remain unanswered. RIDOT will announce on June 6 the plan, cost, and timeline for a new bridge—while critics call for better inspections to ensure all bridges stay safe.  The Public's Radio
