COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 400 families identified by the Community Action Partnership and the Boys & Girls Club will receive 25-pound boxes of food, hygiene products, backpacks and gift cards from Price Rite Marketplace's Feeding Minds & Bodies campaign today at the Providence Culinary Collective. Volunteers packed and stacked pallets of supplies on Thursday as the relief effort continues amid rising food insecurity.  ABC 6

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said that on March 27 they responded to shots fired near Shiloh Street and Hyancinth Street and chased a vehicle whose driver and passenger abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot — they were later caught and a firearm was recovered with no reported victims.  10 WJAR
  • A Providence mortgage broker named Joseph Giuttari was sentenced on Thursday to 55 months in federal prison for running a Ponzi scheme that stole about $4.5 million from investors and the government—he also faces a $20,000 fine and must pay restitution totaling $4,579,131.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Retired Chief Judge Frank Caprio, known for his role in Caught in Providence, will be the commencement speaker at his alma mater Providence College on May 18 at 11 a.m. at Amica Mutual Pavilion — he served 38 years in the Providence Municipal Court and earned his degree there.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island signed the federal grant agreement on Thursday to receive $220 million to rebuild Washington Bridge and is drawing down funds for emergency repairs after the bridge closed in December 2023— the state will pick a contractor in early June to design and build the new bridge.  The Boston Globe
  • Support for a reform bill to overhaul the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council surged at a recent State House hearing as lawmakers, environmental groups, and former council members criticized repeated vacancies and inaction. Lawmakers propose to abolish the appointed council—shifting its work to expert staff—and the House committee will hold a first hearing on the reform bills during the week of April 7.  Rhode Island PBS

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Health started a new program this week that gives doctor, nurse and physician assistant practices up to $90,000 a year from state funds to help train new health workers. State leaders say the program — funded by $2.7 million — will expand hands-on training and ease the shortage of primary care providers.  The Boston Globe
