Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 30th of March.
Good morning, Providence.
🏘️ Community
Janet Coit, former director at the state DEM, will take over as executive director of Farm Fresh RI on April 13 to help local farmers, fishers, and food businesses after a $3M funding cut.
She aims to diversify funding streams and support local food access in the region.
🎭 Culture
Fort Thunder was an underground artist collective housed in a Providence mill that operated from 1995-2001.
Developers evicted the residents and demolished the building, sparking local debate on gentrification that later influenced the city's art scene.
🏛️ Government
Mayor Brett Smiley called for removal of an unfinished mural at downtown The Dark Lady after community and property owners raised concerns over its funding and ties.
The tribute to refugee Iryna Zarutska sparked debate, and officials have not specified legal grounds (next steps remain uncertain).
🏈 Sports
URI named Colleen Mullen as its new women's basketball head coach after her eight-year success at UAlbany.
Mullen succeeds Tammi Reiss and is eager to join the community as she leads the team in the Atlantic 10.
Local Division I softball teams have 12 rising stars primed for a big 2026 season.
Top players like Mia Baffoni (Cranston West) and Ella Grimley from East Providence posted strong numbers last spring and are expected to boost their teams' offense.
