COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Community Food Bank is facing a loss of more than 500,000 pounds of food—worth over $1 million—as USDA cancels 14 truckloads scheduled to arrive by Aug. 18. The cut comes as the food bank serves record numbers amid a potential drop in state funding from $800,000 to $550,000 while senators question USDA about the impact on food banks and American farmers.  The Providence Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Providence College student Neve Palmeri is developing SmartSip—an innovative straw that changes color if it detects ketamine in drinks using silver nanoclusters bound to DNA. She pitched her idea in November 2024 and is now seeking research grants and investors, planning to market the reusable straw to colleges, bars and consumers to prevent drug-facilitated assaults.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • Rhode Island State Police said on Monday that remains found last week in Foster were identified as Michele Romano, a 56-year-old Warwick woman reported missing last year, and an active investigation is underway involving the Warwick Police Department — Office of the Attorney General.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Magaziner said this weekend he will keep living in Providence — breaking his promise to move to the 2nd District because his wife got a new job in Cambridge, he welcomed a new baby, and his Cranston home needed repairs. His decision may affect his future in state politics as critics call it a broken promise.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • State health officials said that federal funds worth $31 million were cut from the Rhode Island Department of Health, funds used for vaccines, tracking infections, and disease prevention. The funding loss may lead to job cuts and weaken the state's ability to fight outbreaks—state leaders are now working with legal experts to explore options.  Rhode Island PBS
