COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Angels volunteers assembled over 800 Easter baskets for families in need. The event will be held Friday, April 3 at Mi Sueno Restaurant on Broad St — with the Easter bunny available for photos and baskets offered on a grab-and-go basis.  10 WJAR
  • Community members at United Way’s Providence headquarters celebrated 401Gives reaching a $1 million funding mark shortly before 10 a.m. on March 31 — the effort benefits over 700 local nonprofits.  The Providence Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Several local grocery chains will offer limited hours this Easter, April 5, while others (Market Basket, ALDI, Dave's Fresh, Target and Costco) will be closed. Shoppers across Providence are advised to check their store websites before heading out.  The Providence Journal
  • Allied Group LLC said it will lay off 154 employees at its Cumberland and Cranston locations, with impacted workers starting May 25 as the company restructures its fulfillment services for life science, biotech firms, and hospitals.  10 WJAR
  • Newport Creamery, known for its ice cream and burgers, was sold Monday to Mark Bogosian—a Cape Cod entrepreneur who plans to revitalize the brand with his restaurant expertise; the deal included eight locations in Rhode Island and Massachusetts as Jan Companies shifts focus away from dining.  The Boston Globe

CULTURE NEWS

  • Renowned authors Edwidge Danticat and Lauren Groff spoke at Brown University on Monday, March 30 about the effects of book bans and the power of art as part of the Discovery Through Dialogue project. They shared views on censorship and the need to engage with challenging texts (especially those seen as troublesome).  Brown University
  • The Journal’s contest for best pizza in Rhode Island now features Bar'Lino in Johnston and Pizza Mamma in Cranston. Voting ends Monday, Apr. 6 at 11:59 p.m. after more than 178,000 votes were cast (votes continue to come in).  The Providence Journal
  • Providence restaurant Loma and chef Derek Wagner of Nicks on Broadway are James Beard Awards finalists, with Loma recognized nationally for Best New Bar and Wagner for Best Chef Northeast in his second year+winners will be named June 15 in Chicago.  The Providence Journal

  • Central Falls High School opened on March 3 at Lonsdale and Higginson Avenues with modern classrooms, science labs, and a rooftop outdoor classroom built for 751 students. The new building (replacing a 100-year-old facility) reflects community investment following years of financial challenges.  The Boston Globe
