COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Clothes to Kids RI is a 10-year nonprofit that provides new and quality used clothing free to low-income or in-crisis school-age children in Providence County. The organization—now located at 11 Commerce Way in Johnston—serves about 200 kids monthly and needs more sweatpants, sneakers, and underwear to keep filling its racks amid funding cuts.  10 WJAR
  • United Way RI is hosting its annual 401Gives fundraiser to help local nonprofits that lost federal funding, with hundreds of organizations joining the effort. Organizers expect to raise $4.01 million by 6 p.m. today — up from $3.86 million raised last year.  ABC 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University ended its record-setting fundraising campaign by raising over $4.4 billion from more than 76,800 donors by December 31, which helped expand financial aid, improve campus facilities and support top faculty. The campaign’s success—boosting research and teaching—has set a new course for the school’s future.  Brown University
  • The Providence School Board elected new leadership on April 1 — half of the board was elected and half was appointed by Mayor Brett Smiley — and approved a free one-year coaching service to help improve support for students as the state prepares to regain control this summer. The board and officials say the changes aim to boost focus on students while the state retains the final decision.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha and 23 other state attorneys general filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Providence to challenge the termination of nearly $11 billion in public health grants, including $31 million for Rhode Island, arguing the cuts were made without warning and legal basis—They seek a temporary restraining order to restore the funding and protect essential health programs.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A 6-pound, 11-ounce baby girl named April Elvannia da Rocha Oliveira was born at 10:59 p.m. last Tuesday at the new Brown University Labor and Delivery Center at Women & Infants Hospital—marking a milestone as the $35 million, 18,000-square-foot center with 20 beds replaces an old facility dating back to 1986. This birth sets the stage for enhanced maternal care at a hospital where more than 80% of the state's babies are delivered.  The Providence Journal

  • The Providence Journal has released preseason power rankings for Rhode Island boys lacrosse teams across four divisions ahead of the 2025 season.
