CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An Irish national illegally in the U.S. was detained on wire fraud — conspiracy charges after allegedly defrauding elderly homeowners in Rhode Island and Massachusetts through inflated repair bids that may have cost them over $1,000,000. Go Local Prov
- ➤ CVS Pharmacy in Woonsocket filed a 45-page motion asking a federal judge to dismiss most claims in a DOJ opioid lawsuit—attorneys argued that key facts such as doctors’ identities were missing while prosecutors must respond by June 4 and officials accused CVS of violating the Controlled Substances Act by filling invalid prescriptions. - ➤ On March 18th, the court continued choosing jurors for the Karen Read murder trial in Bristol County and has already selected seven of the 16 needed. Judge Beverly Cannone scolded Read’s defense team for misleading the court as the trial follows a mistrial last year after Read was accused of killing her boyfriend John O’Keefe when she hit him with her car during a snowstorm in 2022. 10 WJAR

- ➤ The Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame board announced on Thursday, April 03 that nine Rhode Islanders have been chosen for membership. The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 3 at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston with a 5:00 p.m. social hour—followed by dinner, entertainment and the official induction, and reservations are due by April 18. - ➤ Yesterday, Mayor Bob DaSilva, Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien and Secretary of State Gregg Amore cut the ribbon on reused McCoy seats at East Providence High School ahead of the Townies season—while demolition of McCoy Stadium continues and work on the new unified high school is set to begin in summer. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Save South County Hospital held a community meeting Thursday at South Kingstown High School — where up to 300 people gathered — to discuss concerns over hospital management after a lawsuit and staff protests. The hospital’s parent group, South County Healthcare System Endowment, joined the meeting and planned to elect nine trustees to address the ongoing issues. ABC 6
