Good morning, Providence. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of April.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In January, GameStop closed two stores in Rhode Island as part of its store portfolio review amid a shift to digital game downloads. The closures—at Centre of New England in Coventry and at RK Plaza in Middletown—come as the company is expected to close additional stores in fiscal year 2025.  The Providence Journal
  • Jordan's Furniture announced that president Eliot Tatelman will step down after 53 years to pass daily operations to his sons Josh and Michael. He will remain involved as a familiar mascot in company commercials — a change that keeps the business in the family and continues its legacy since 1928.  The Providence Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Attorney General Peter Neronha released a report showing gun crimes in Rhode Island dropped in 2024 with 751 cases charged and disposed of—82 fewer than in 2023 and a decline in Providence County from 370 to 358, although cases involving multiple firearms, higher capacity magazines and ghost guns increased while 265 cases remain pending.  ABC 6
  • Federal authorities arrested Irish national John O'Brien for wire fraud and conspiracy charges related to defrauding homeowners in Warwick, Providence, Pawtucket and West Roxbury of nearly $2 million through unsolicited home repair offers—court documents detail that victims paid for repairs that were unnecessary.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brown University may lose $510 million in federal funding that could slow research and hurt local jobs—state lawmakers caution the cuts may ripple through local life science projects. Some students say the measure is driven by political motives rather than an effort to make campus safer.  The Boston Globe

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Providence Bruins won a 4-0 game against the Charlotte Checkers on Friday night at the Amica Mutual Pavilion with goalie Brandon Bussi stopping all 23 shots and Dans Locmelis recording his first point—helped by goals from Riley Tufte and Tyler Pitlick—and they will face the Utica Comets today at 7:00 p.m. at the Adirondack Bank Center.  ABC 6
