COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Pawtucket resident has asked local leaders for help as rats have become an increasing problem in her neighborhood — sightings have occurred near her home, the school playground, and gardens. The city’s Rodent Abatement Program has helped many, but her rat trap has not been checked.  10 WJAR
  • The Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol provides veterans with more than round-the-clock care (including a barber shop, library, and organized trips such as fishing and lighthouse tours) as it seeks donations to support these community programs.  10 WJAR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Former Brown University professor Derek Stein left his tenured post to lead Adept Materials - a company that launched Lilypad, a humidity-regulating paint and primer available online earlier this year - and now plans a next product for a protective wall layer.  The Boston Globe

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bravo aired the second episode of The Real Housewives of Rhode Island last week, introducing new cast member Rulla Nehme Pontarelli from Lincoln (a local financial planner) amid heated moments at Newport Vineyards that spotlight ongoing personal conflicts and community gossip.  The Boston Globe

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reported that the national average gas price topped $4 a gallon yesterday, while here in Rhode Island prices remain around $3.99 (with Massachusetts at $3.82).  10 WJAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Stephen Porder, co-founder of Possibly, installed new tilt-turn windows at his home for lasting comfort after a broken window left ice on the interior. He said the upgrade was done more for personal comfort than to boost energy savings.  The Public's Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Providence should note that federal tax returns are due by April 15; those needing extra time can file for a six-month extension so that returns are due by Oct. 15 (taxpayers filing electronically usually receive refunds within 21 days while paper returns take up to eight weeks).  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors warn that shingles can affect even younger adults when stress triggers the virus, so Providence residents aged 50 should get the two-shot vaccine to avoid severe pain — recent studies also suggest the vaccine may protect against dementia.  The Public's Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Men's basketball coach Bryon Hodgson announced the hiring of six staff members to join PC's program. All worked with him at University of South Florida (USF) and will build the team in Friartown for the upcoming season.  Go Local Prov
  • URI seniors Jonah Hinton and Jahmere Tripp announced Monday on social media they will return to the men's basketball program for the 2026-27 season (following transfers from Atlantic 10 rivals) and will join as seniors.  The Providence Journal
