CRIME NEWS

  • A Woonsocket man, Emmanuel Algaria, convicted in 2015 of killing his girlfriend Catherine Salvi, will be released on parole in May (before finishing his 18-year sentence), and her mother said the family did not get notice of the parole hearing.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Providence Journal is asking readers to vote for their Student of the Week after high school principals, teachers, and counselors nominated Jack Sullivan from South Kingstown High School and Bobbi Calder from William Davies Career and Technical High School—voting is open until noon on April 10 and the winner will be announced Friday on providencejournal.com and in print in the Providence Sunday Journal.  The Providence Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • University of Rhode Island researchers used millions of animal photos to study 445 species and find that nearly 40% show more than one active period—differences that shift with human activity and climate change. The study, which collected data from 20,080 camera sites in 38 countries, could lead to a new way of classifying animal behavior.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Community critics say online sports betting ads on social media lure young people into gambling—a recent survey showed many under 30 had gambling problems. Lawmakers in Rhode Island are now discussing new rules to cut these ads and change contracts that let users 18 and older bet online.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anchor Medical Associates, with centers in Providence, Warwick, and Lincoln, will close on June 30. The state department of health has set up a webpage to help patients find a new primary doctor—patients are advised to print their medication list and request copies of their medical records before the practice shuts.  ABC 6

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • City and state leaders gathered Monday for Tempo’s grand opening and Tandem’s groundbreaking in Providence’s innovation district. The phased project — led by Pennrose and partners — provides affordable housing, retail space, and childcare near I-195.  ABC 6
