CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office dismissed indictments against four co-defendants in a narcotics case due to egregious police misconduct by former New Bedford Police Detective Jared Lucas and an informant with whom he had a sexual relationship—actions that compromised the integrity of the investigation against individuals with serious drug-related offenses. 10 WJAR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), several organizations will host cleanup projects, zoo activities and guided frog hikes in Providence, South Kingstown and Westerly. The events will give families a chance to learn about nature and help protect local parks and waterways. The Providence Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Rhode Island Legislature will review two bills that would charge fossil fuel companies fees to help pay for a clean energy transition and cover small rate hikes with rebates. The Economic and Climate Resilience Act taxes fossil fuels at the point of sale while the Climate Superfund Act targets past emissions from large companies — aiming to shift the cost from residents to polluters. - ➤ The Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission approved new cannabis rules in an 18-minute meeting on Friday—paving the way for 24 new retail licenses including six for social equity applicants and six for worker-owned cooperatives—and the regulations, which set fees and criteria refined from public feedback, will take effect May 1. - ➤ On April 8, the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council named nine new members to the Fishermen’s Advisory Board—this group will now review SouthCoast Wind’s plan to run underwater cables near local fishing areas. - ➤ Brown University is under investigation by the Senate and House Judiciary Committees for alleged antitrust violations in its tuition pricing, and documents will be due April 23.
