CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old Burrillville man, Jake Suprenant, was charged with reckless driving and other vehicle violations after his truck rolled over on Wallum Lake Road on April 8 when he allegedly lost control while driving 104 mph—he is set to be arraigned on May 6.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rhode Island actress Viola Davis saw her wax figure unveiled last week at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood—created to honor her distinguished career and detailed features—and she said the lifelike display impressed her and hopes visitors feel inspired by it—capturing a moment that celebrates her work.  The Providence Journal
  • WaterFire Providence announced its schedule for 2025 with six full lightings, two partial lightings, and four bridge lightings — the events will run from May 15 to New Year's Eve — and include specific start times, sunset times, and end times for each display.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 400 Providence students are taking math camps during April break at Juanita Sanchez as part of the Learn365RI program supported by Governor Dan McKee and Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. The camps offer targeted math lessons and enrichment activities for grades three to eight—designed to close learning gaps and boost confidence.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday morning for Tax Day, Rhode Island’s congressional delegation—Senator Jack Reed, Congressman Seth Magaziner and Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos—held a press conference at 11:30 a.m. at St. Martin de Porres Center to address proposed cuts to Social Security that could affect more than 236,000 residents and to discuss solutions.  ABC 6

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • With spring break underway, families in Providence can enjoy a range of events including an animatronic dinosaur exhibit at Roger Williams Park Zoo and a Rainforest Reptile Show at the Children’s Museum tomorrow at 2 p.m.—both free—and Fairy Garden Days at the Botanical Center until April 27, Food Truck Friday on April 18 from 5 p.m. until dark, along with the reopening of Wicked Tulip Flower Farm and creative sessions at Create Color Art Studio in Narragansett.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tuesday's high school games saw North Kingstown win a 5-4 softball match, Westerly beat Toll Gate 10-0, Johnston defeat Woonsocket 17-0, and Scituate secure a 2-0 baseball win with Travis Howman pitching a complete game 2-hitter — notable wins also came in boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse and boys volleyball. Wednesday's schedule features contests in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and volleyball, with matchups like Cumberland at Barrington, La Salle versus South Kingstown and Rogers against Central — local teams continue their season action.  The Providence Journal
