CULTURE NEWS

  • Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket will host the two-day Island Rhodes Music Festival for reggae music in August (featuring Slightly Stoopid and Rebelution and other acts) as the venue expands its live entertainment lineup.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University is planning a new building on Brook Street to unify its growing economics department currently spread across five buildings (the process will include architect selection by summer and construction set to begin in 2027).  Brown University
  • Brown University professors Ieva Jusionyte (international security and anthropology) and Matthew Kraft (education and economics) were awarded Guggenheim fellowships on Tuesday, April 14. Jusionyte will fund research for her next book on extraditions while Kraft will study ways to improve K-12 teaching careers among nearly 5,000 applicants.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents can help local hummingbirds after a ruby-throated bird was spotted in Exeter on April 14. Charles Clarkson of Audubon Avian Research recommends mixing one part sugar to four parts water and cleaning feeders weekly + placing them in open areas to ensure safe feeding.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Providence basketball player Jamier Jones announced on Tuesday his commitment to join the University of Missouri, connecting him with former coach Kim English. He averaged 11.9 points and 4.5 rebounds last season — a solid performance that set the stage for his next chapter.  The Providence Journal
  • Local high school sports saw many close contests Wednesday, including a 6-5 win for Ponaganset girls lacrosse with a late goal at the Bend Street Complex and several dramatic wins in baseball and tennis statewide.  The Providence Journal
  • Rogers dominated Tiverton in a baseball game on Wednesday, April 15 — the team showcased a strong offense on a road trip for a 19-8 win.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island FC lost to New England Revolution 3-1 on penalties in a US Open Cup match in Pawtucket on Tuesday, Apr. 14, after extra time ended 1-1; JJ Williams scored the stoppage-time equalizer that spurred extra effort (attendance 6,073).  The Providence Journal
  • Providence Journal announced its 2026 All-State Girls Swim Team, highlighting top high school performers from North Kingstown, Barrington, and East Providence at the RIIL Championships. Selections honor standout athletes in individual and relay events.  The Providence Journal
