- ➤ Providence firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze on Pine Street at 1:30 a.m.—no injuries were reported—and are now investigating the cause. ABC 6
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Providence police are investigating a stabbing that occurred on Tuesday when a man in his 50s was attacked on Cranston Street after 9 PM — the victim said an unknown man hit him on the head and stabbed him before fleeing, and he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. Go Local Prov
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ USA TODAY's 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards ranked the Providence Riverwalk as the ninth best riverwalk in the U.S.—a scenic 2.4-mile route along the waterfront with views of historic sites and public art. Today the walk is open as it undergoes a resilience project that will improve ADA access, water quality and its connection to regional trail systems. The Providence Journal
- ➤ During a two-hour hearing in Providence County Superior Court, Associate Justice William E. Carnes delayed ruling on Chevron’s motion to dismiss a 2018 climate lawsuit and ordered the company to provide records of its Rhode Island business activity since 1965. Chevron must comply within 90 days while another hearing will be held on May 8. Rhode Island PBS

- ➤ Providence Mayor Brett Smiley will unveil his fiscal budget proposal to the City Council today at 5:30 p.m.—his plan aims to raise around $20 million by increasing taxes, fines and fees while trimming spending to balance the city’s books. The proposal also changes school funding to $147 million, and public hearings are set for May 6 and June 9. The Boston Globe
- ➤ On April 16th, Mayor Smiley presented a budget proposal that would raise Providence’s tax levy by 7.5% to fill a $25 million gap needed for public school funding after a $15 million settlement. The proposal adjusts property taxes and fees, offers tax breaks to seniors and veterans, and lowers rates for renters and local businesses—pending a temporary removal of the annual 4% tax increase cap and approval by the General Assembly. - ➤ Mayor Brett Smiley presented his proposed fiscal 2026 budget for Providence yesterday, outlining a $624 million plan that raises residential property taxes by about 4% (roughly $13 extra per month) while cutting spending in nearly every department. The proposal further lowers local business tax rates, removes 23 staffing positions, and reduces overtime spending to save the city millions. ABC 6

- ➤ Anchor Medical Associates announced it will close on June 30 — leaving 25,000 patients needing new primary care providers — which has raised urgent concerns among state senators over a long-term primary care crisis.
