ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, Apr. 13, a fast-moving fire on Goddard Street destroyed a Providence home and displaced ten people, prompting firefighters (67 in total) to battle flames, rescue three cats and begin investigating hoarding conditions as the family searches for stable housing.  10 WJAR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gasoline prices are expected to drop below $4 as early as this weekend as crude oil falls — drivers in Providence may soon notice lower pump prices if trends continue. Analysts say prices could ease further by Labor Day, though returning to pre-war levels may take months.  The Public's Radio
  • Rhode Island stocks advanced strongly over the past year as Citizens Bank rose 81.6 percent & United Natural Foods climbed 94 percent amid robust market gains, though Bally’s declined 29 percent.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An investigation found that Smithfield Public Schools mishandled a Sept. 29 hazing incident in which two senior players locked a Jewish freshman in a locker room and sprayed him with Lysol, prompting a five-part resolution with policy revisions and staff training (effective through Aug. 31) to bolster student safety.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island lawmakers passed matching bills on Friday, Apr. 17 to save the historic Crook Point Bridge in Providence. The law creates a three-member authority appointed by the mayor (with council approval) to raise funds for its upkeep and redevelopment.  10 WJAR

  • Friday brought lively high school sports as Narragansett boys lacrosse won 5-3 over Lincoln and local softball, baseball, and volleyball teams posted key scores - teams will play Monday and later this week to continue the action.  The Providence Journal
