CULTURE NEWS

  • Local runners have formed a nonprofit to honor Ellison 'Tarzan' Brown by commissioning a life-size bronze statue depicting his 1939 Boston Marathon win—he was a Narragansett Indian and local hero. The statue will stand 67 inches tall and will be installed at the new Tomaquag Museum on URI land or at a prominent spot in Westerly if the museum is not ready—sculptor Serena Bates said the project will take eight to 12 months and has raised $29,536 toward a $50,000 goal.  The Boston Globe
  • Brown University professor Kwame Dawes, born in Ghana and raised in Jamaica, was named Jamaica’s poet laureate and joined Brown in 2024. He said his role will start projects to archive and promote Jamaican poetry by working with musicians, writers, and youth—efforts to honor the island's poetic traditions.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Business and environmental groups urged legislators to adopt House bill 6207—this plan would add a bottle bill with refunds and require companies to take back their packaging. They say the change will cut local government costs and reduce litter—steps that aim to protect our state's natural resources and tourism.  The Boston Globe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island DMV Administrator Bud Craddock said that starting May 7th REAL IDs will be required for boarding domestic flights and accessing federal facilities — he discussed the details in an interview with ABC6 News Anchor Karah Bailey.  ABC 6
  • Governor Dan McKee filed a budget change that renamed the housing agency to the Executive Office of Housing and merged its advisory groups—this plan follows a report from Housing Secretary Deborah Goddard to fix slow home building and cut red tape. The change will name the Secretary as permanent chair of the RIHousing board and shift the Housing Production Fund to the new agency as the state works to make building affordable homes easier.  Rhode Island PBS

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A.R. Building Co. must refund nearly $100K to about 400 local tenant applicants after the Attorney General settled claims that the company charged excessive application fees and imposed tougher processes for applicants with disabilities. The firm will stop these fees and those who paid from January 1, 2024 to January 30, 2025 must claim their refunds by July 1—unclaimed funds will go to the Special Olympics.  Rhode Island PBS
