CULTURE NEWS

  • Coggeshall Farm Museum in Bristol offers a step back into 18th century farm life with interpreters demonstrating sheep shearing, weaving, and maple sugaring every weekend from April 11 to Sept. 27. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth on this 48-acre historic site.  The Providence Journal
  • The 72nd Newport Jazz Festival will take place from July 31 — Aug. 2 at Fort Adams with nearly 50 acts including headliners Jon Batiste, Herbie Hancock and Thundercat; ticket sales began on April 21 for limited three-day passes with other tickets available April 23.  The Providence Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Electric Boat will hire 8,000 workers by the end of 2026 to boost its submarine production. The company will add 3,000 to 3,500 jobs at Quonset Point, offering local candidates starting pay (about $24 per hour) as part of its effort following a $15.38 billion Navy contract.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. McKee and education leaders highlighted a $2 million investment in out-of-school learning in the FY 2027 budget proposal on Tuesday. They visited Learn365RI programming at the Boys and Girls Club of Warwick during the April school vacation to showcase interactive math challenges and paper plane races.  10 WJAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management acquired 68 acres in Hopkinton – purchased for $1.66 million with funding from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Rhode Island Chapter of The Nature Conservancy – to expand its Rockville Wildlife Management Area for hunting, fishing, and trapping.  The Boston Globe
  • State officials installed nearly 300 window heat pump units in Carroll Tower today to replace old electric baseboard heating for seniors. The $1.25 million upgrade is expected to save lots of energy and money annually — serving as a model for future affordable housing projects.  Downtown Providence

HEALTH NEWS

  • Providence authorities warned after treating 20 overdose cases last week — the Rhode Island Department of Health said the city's rate is twice the statewide average and urged residents to use local prevention and treatment resources.  The Boston Globe
  • Butler Hospital was renamed Butler Behavioral Health to better reflect its full range of mental health & substance abuse services, announced by Care New England on April 21.  The Providence Journal

  • Providence College has signed former Georgetown point guard Malik Mack (who averaged 13.6 PPG with the Hoyas) as coach Bryon Hodgson builds his new guard lineup for the upcoming season.  Go Local Prov
  • Chariho softball earned a 3-1 win over La Salle on Monday, Apr. 20 at Rhode Island College, proving they can compete against the best and energizing their state title bid + the Chargers now look toward the playoffs.  The Providence Journal
