COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new gathering space is coming to downtown Providence. Nearly a year and a half after breaking ground, state and local leaders held a ribbon-cutting for the 195 District Park Pavilion along the Providence River (near Ship and Elbow streets), and it will soon host events and local businesses.  Downtown Providence

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport Folk Festival adds four acts including Vulfpeck, Tiny Habits, Courtney Marie Andrews and Dawes Duo. The sold-out event runs at Fort Adams State Park from July 24-26 and fans can join the waitlist via the festival app to secure returned tickets.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roger Williams University president Ioannis N. Miaoulis, who led the school for seven years, will retire on May 31 after overseeing commencement ceremonies—chief of staff Dr. Brian Williams will serve as interim president starting June 1 to guide the university into its next chapter.  The Boston Globe
  • St. Andrew’s School announced on Wednesday that Stephanie Morin will serve as Interim Head while David Tinagero remains on leave and tapped former Hasbro CEO Alfred Verrecchia as advisor to support school operations. The school aims to maintain steady leadership in the coming weeks.  Go Local Prov

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Providence Preservation Society calls on Brown University to pause plans to tear down four historic houses (built in the 1870s-1880s) on Brook Street due to environmental and heritage concerns. Brown is set to present a revised master plan to the City Plan Commission in coming months.  Go Local Prov
  • The Rhode Island Department of Health is accepting public comments on a proposed PFAS treatment system upgrade for North Smithfield schools and will hold a public hearing on May 18 at 1:00 p.m. at RIDOH Auditorium if at least 25 requests are received by May 4.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • United Way’s chief policy and impact officer, Kyle Bennett, said today that the Rhode Island Free Clinic fills care gaps for neighbors who cannot afford health care+ his commentary links accessible care to stronger family stability in our community.  The Providence Journal
  • Veteran news anchor Mario Hilario felt lightheaded during NBC 10 News yesterday and left work to get checked out—he said he is fine after receiving fluids and rest and will return to work soon.  The Boston Globe

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new 41-unit mixed-use building is under construction on Knight and Westminster streets in the West End as nonprofit SWAP redesigns the project to offer more two- and three-bedroom income-restricted apartments (including units for people with intellectual disabilities) with residents moving in by May 2027.  The Providence Journal
