  • Providence soccer fans face costly, limited travel options to Foxborough with no direct train service; riders must take a commuter rail to Boston then pay up to $80 for a connecting bus or choose a $95 option amid heavy traffic. Officials plan extra service for matchgoers.  The Boston Globe

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Providence Fire Department quickly extinguished a house fire on Imera Street Friday morning with only minor smoke and water damage reported and no injuries, allowing residents to remain in their homes.  10 WJAR

  • Green Line Apothecary has transformed from a longtime neighborhood drugstore to an ice cream parlor that features vintage soda fountain recipes (the new sign went up Friday). The Providence shop will open after summer construction and the Wakefield shop will open shortly after.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • On a sunny Friday afternoon, nearly 100 students gathered on College Green for a flash mob organized by No Empty Seats and Attitude Dance Company to ease exam stress; campus police briefly joined the playful routine before the group dispersed with smiles.  Brown University
  • Al Forno earned top Italian restaurant honors for Rhode Island from Chowhound on April 24, with its South Water Street location recognized for its grilled pizza & award winning cuisine since 1980.  The Providence Journal

  • On April 23, Jaron Lanier spoke at Brown University, saying AI works best with human creativity — a view he backed by performing with a local jazz combo. He stressed that crediting individual contributions is key to unlocking AI's potential.  Brown University

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from Brown University & the National Institute of Standards and Technology developed a new mechanophenotyping cytometer that measures cell stiffness by using time-of-flight; the device allowed them to test up to 100 cells per second on April 13. The method may soon help diagnose diseases with improved cell elasticity.  Brown University
  • State officials have quarantined all ruminant livestock (including goats) from public contact at Rusty Buckle Petting Zoo in Chepachet after three confirmed and three probable cases of cryptosporidiosis were reported following visitor contact, and they advise recent visitors to monitor for symptoms.  The Boston Globe
  • The Rhode Island Department of Health announced that six wild animals tested positive for rabies in Providence County over the last six weeks (three raccoons in Burrillville, a bat and a coyote in Lincoln, and a raccoon in Providence).  The Boston Globe
