Good morning, Providence. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Marrapese, son of late mobster Frank Bobo Marrapese, pleaded guilty in Providence to killing his ex-girlfriend Lauren Ise in a Cranston apartment in 2019 and faces sentencing on July 31.  The Boston Globe
  • Narragansett police searched Scarborough Beach for a body after a Facebook post hinted at a serial killer burying bodies, but the poster later said the post was part of a made-up book (two cadaver dogs were used) and police confirmed on Thursday that nothing was found.  ABC 6

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On April 22, a Providence Superior Court judge rejected Chevron’s motion to dismiss Rhode Island’s 2018 climate change lawsuit against 21 fossil fuel companies for alleged procedural violations. The ruling orders Chevron to provide additional business records within 90 days and sets the next hearing for May 8—ensuring the case continues.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Peter Neronha said on April 24 that Rhode Island currently has no law to stop bid rigging and urged lawmakers to pass a bill that would criminalize the practice—he argued that taxpayers need better safeguards. Governor Dan McKee’s administration has opposed the legislation, saying its broad language duplicates existing rules and may negatively affect the state’s procurement process.  The Providence Journal
  • A federal judge denied the government’s appeal to block the transfer of Rümeysa Öztürk—a Tufts student detained in Louisiana since March—to Vermont, and her bail hearing is set for May 9.  ABC 6
  • Senator Samuel D. Zurier filed a bill that would require a two-thirds majority vote from the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation board for future financing—he introduced the measure after a 2022 tie allowed Governor McKee to shift $27 million from the Tidewater Landing project to finance a new soccer stadium for Rhode Island FC, who will play on May 3. The bill is now with the Senate Commerce Committee for further study.  The Boston Globe
  • After longtime Senate President Dominick Ruggerio died on Monday, Senator Valarie Lawson said she will run for Senate President while Senator Frank Ciccone plans to run for Majority Leader—both lawmakers stressed honoring Ruggerio's legacy first. Ruggerio’s wake is set for Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Maceroni Funeral Home in North Providence and his funeral will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at Saint Anthony’s Church.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Warwick’s pitcher Anthony Burt, who committed to play at St. John’s University, threw a strong game on April 24 at Manning Field by striking out three of Scituate’s first four batters and leading his team to an 11-1 win. He improved his fastball and off-speed pitches from last season — his hard work showing as the Wizards gain confidence — which adds strength to his role in the team.  The Providence Journal
