CRIME NEWS

  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement said on April 24 a detainment action at Rhode Island Hospital targeted a Dominican national who became combative and was tasered amid a protest outside the hospital, and the agency said its officers used minimal force due to the individual’s violent history—which includes past domestic violence charges.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brown will host a three-day event called 130 Years of Jewish Life at Brown from Nov 7 to 9 that honors the long history of its Jewish community. The event will feature panels, meals and social gatherings—and will invite alumni, students and faculty to join the celebration.  Brown University

ECONOMY NEWS

  • About 50 Rhode Island labor and housing advocates protested alleged wage theft at the construction site of Alta Altitude at 2119 Post Road in Warwick on April 26—calling for stronger wage protection enforcement and a tenants union to support local workers.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight Brown University faculty have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as part of a nearly 250-member class that honors top scholars in various fields. Induction ceremonies will be held in October in Cambridge—adding to the 55 Brown faculty previously recognized—highlighting the university’s strong impact on research and scholarship.  Brown University

  • Today, the Boston Celtics face the Orlando Magic in Game 4 of the NBA playoffs at the Kia Center in Orlando with tip-off set for 7 p.m. The Celtics must win four games to advance and will meet the winner of the New York Knicks—Detroit Pistons series while Providence listeners can tune in on WPRV 790 AM.  The Providence Journal
  • Annie Burton finished with a goal and four assists as No. 18 Brown lost 11-7 to No. 15 Penn on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field — Greta Criqui scored three goals to reach a career high.
