COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence nonprofit McAuley Ministries named Christine McDermott as its new executive director after Barbara Haynes retired. McDermott will strengthen services by opening a child care center at the Village in early May (22 apartments) and celebrating 30 years at its Central Falls thrift store this summer.  The Boston Globe

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters note that Providence is overdue for a hurricane since the last one struck in 1991. Although the chance of a hurricane in 2026 is low, experts warn residents (many of whom have never faced a major storm) to review emergency plans.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Rhode Island woman suffered weeks of financial turmoil after a vendor error mistakenly marked her deceased, freezing her bank and Social Security payments until Bank of America reopened her accounts earlier this month - she hopes others avoid a similar ordeal.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at Brown and Columbia found that New York neighborhoods cut off by busy roads have higher schizophrenia hospital visits + they say new urban design plans might boost community mental health.  Brown University
  • Rhode Island officials confirmed its second measles case this year when a woman in her 20s who traveled internationally received treatment for the disease at Brown University Health Urgent Care in Middletown on April 24 (the case is unrelated to the earlier one) and she did not require hospitalization.  The Boston Globe

SPORTS NEWS

  • Casey Macera scored four goals to secure a 15-11 win for the unbeaten Westerly girls lacrosse team over Cumberland on April 27 at Tucker Field. Ella Seltzer and Gianna Falcone each had hat tricks in the close contest.  The Providence Journal
  • The college hoops transfer portal closed, and Providence-area programs reshaped rosters last week before offseason workouts began. URI and Providence added top players (including Malik Mack and Leonardo Marangon) while Bryant signed new recruits and Brown senior Drew Kania entered the portal as teams prepared for the 2026-27 season.  The Providence Journal
  • Monday, April 27 brought a full slate of high school sports games after spring break, as teams across the region delivered dramatic finishes and standout individual performances, highlighted by a walk-off win by St. Raphael and strong pitching in several baseball contests.  The Providence Journal
  • Hendricken volleyball swept Chariho on Monday, Apr. 27 during a local match (photos captured the win closely).  The Providence Journal
  • Local softball fans can vote for the Week 4 Longplex Athlete of the Week from nominees including Lexi Fredericks, Adriana Jeannenot, Elle Kershaw, Lila Leys and Ella Mezzanotte, with voting closing Friday and the winner announced next week.  The Providence Journal
  • Brown defensive back Elias Archie will join the Tennessee Titans for NFL rookie minicamp workouts on Saturday after adding a second invitation, while URI offensive lineman Thomas Buxton will attend minicamp with the Indianapolis Colts following standout seasons at their schools.  The Providence Journal
  • Local boys volleyball fans can vote for Longplex Athlete of the Week with nominees such as Mike Gallo, Ashton Mak, Dylan Shaw, Nomar Torres Luna and Pablo Valdez; coaches must submit game results to the Providence Journal before 10 p.m. as voting closes Friday at 11:59 p.m.  The Providence Journal
