ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • More than 45 city firefighters responded to a house fire on Lubec Street in Providence on Monday, April 28th— the blaze started just before 1 p.m. and included an explosion while firefighters battled the flames, leaving all residents unharmed while one firefighter was treated for shoulder and back pain.  ABC 6

CRIME NEWS

  • ICE defended its agents after tasing a Dominican man during an arrest in Providence on Thursday — the agency said he resisted by reaching for an officer’s belt and had a previous arrest record — while some protesters outside a local hospital criticized the incident.  ABC 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Paige Moreau, a Roger Williams University student from Rhode Island, died on April 26 in Florence, Italy after a medical emergency during her study abroad program. She served as a resident assistant and orientation manager, worked as an intern in Providence + her loss has left her community mourning.  The Providence Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Brown oceanographer Baylor Fox-Kemper explained that climate change is stressing Rhode Island's drinking water systems as rising sea levels and more extreme weather are affecting coastal islands like Aquidneck and Conanicut. His research showed that these communities must improve water systems—changes needed to protect supplies against saltwater intrusion and future storms.  Rhode Island PBS

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Providence Journal released midseason rankings for RIIL girls lacrosse in Divisions I through IV—Moses Brown leads Division I and East Providence tops Division III while other teams gear up for crucial upcoming games. The rankings mark a key moment in the season as teams prepare to improve their standings ahead of final contests.  The Providence Journal
  • Brown, Bryant, Providence and URI have updated their men’s basketball rosters as the transfer portal formally closed today, with each school gaining new commitments and seeing key players transfer out. Six local players are seeking NCAA waivers after being ruled ineligible for next season + these moves set the stage for the 2025-26 campaign.  The Providence Journal
  • The Providence Journal released updated midseason power rankings for RIIL Boys Lacrosse, with La Salle ahead in Division I and Portsmouth and Mt. Hope topping Divisions II and III respectively. Coaches are set to report scores more promptly as teams tackle busy schedules this week — the rankings also call for a dedicated lacrosse stats website similar to hockey's.  The Providence Journal
