CRIME NEWS

  • Pawtucket police investigated a targeted shooting that took place Tuesday night near Bloomingdale Avenue and Humboldt Avenue — officers responded at 5:45 p.m. and an adult male with gunshot wounds was taken to a local hospital where he later died.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Keith Stokes of Newport was named Rhode Island’s second historian laureate and will serve through April 30 (a five-year term) while set to speak at the Independence Day event on May 3 at the State House. He said his mission is to share the state’s past to help unite its residents.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Anchor Medical Associates will close its operations in the coming months, leaving roughly 25,000 Rhode Islanders to find new doctors. Gov. Dan McKee has proposed primary care reforms that include faster Medicaid reviews, a mandate for insurers to double primary care spending by 2029, fewer prior authorizations, a $5 million hiring grant, and expanded student loan forgiveness — though Attorney General Peter Neronha dismissed the plan as half-baked.  Rhode Island PBS
  • On Wednesday, the general assembly gathered in the Senate Chamber to honor former Senate President Dominick Ruggerio — a leader who dedicated decades to public service — and House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi said he would move forward in Ruggerio’s honor.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Staff at Butler Hospital in Providence will strike on May 15 after 91% of frontline workers voted to protest low pay + staffing shortages and increased workplace violence. Care New England said the hospital will remain open with a third-party vendor for patient care while contract talks continue.  The Boston Globe

SPORTS NEWS

  • Providence Journal released its 2025 Winter All-State teams online and in print since April 21. The sports staff picked local high school athletes using in-person tests, stats, and coach awards—continuing an award tradition for over 80 years.  The Providence Journal
  • Kelvin Odih, a Providence native and top recruit, has committed to St. John's men's basketball program after reopening his recruitment when West Virginia’s coach left for Indiana—he initially pledged to West Virginia in October at Zuccolo Recreation Center. His signing strengthens a Red Storm roster projected as a top NCAA Tournament seed next season.  The Providence Journal
