CRIME NEWS
- ➤ After a six-day trial in Kent County, a jury found 30-year-old Katherine Castaneda guilty of manslaughter in the 2020 death of her 9-month-old son Jayson JJ Flores, who died after she left him in a car seat in Cranston—she remains free on bail and will be sentenced on July 25. The Boston Globe
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island remains the only state that does not let its police commission strip training certifications for officers who break rules despite reform efforts in 2021, 2023 and 2024. In a January 2025 meeting, police chiefs said they would study outdated statutes—possibly leading to future changes. The Public's Radio
- ➤ Helena Foulkes, a gubernatorial candidate and former CVS president, said in January 2022 she was angry with Purdue Pharma for its misleading practices—an investigation later revealed she received two separate $1,000 contributions from Purdue lobbyist Steve Kinney around that time. Go Local Prov
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for Thursday to open Women and Infants Hospital’s new Brown University Labor and Delivery Center, which has been planned for four years with an anonymous donation completing a $35 million fundraising effort. The center will feature 20 enlarged delivery rooms with individual bathrooms and windows—designed to serve about 8,600 annual births at roughly 24 a day. 10 WJAR
