COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ocean State Media now broadcasts statewide on a new 103.7 FM signal approved by the FCC, replacing five frequencies by June 30 with a $4.9 million acquisition. Red Sox games will shift to B101 (101.5 FM) as the change aims for clearer reception across the state.  Rhode Island PBS

  • Proclamation Ale Company in Warwick will close after 12 years due to ongoing challenges including the loss of its founder and legal battles. The brewery will keep its taproom open during normal hours until it runs out of inventory.  10 WJAR

  • Nearly a month after officials announced the removal of a controversial Iryna Zarutska mural from the Dark Lady club in downtown Providence, the unfinished display still stands — one owner warns he will remove it himself next week if Boston Building Wraps does not act.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island’s Old State House reopens this month to celebrate the 1776 Act of Renunciation with a ribbon-cutting and open house (3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) on Monday, May 4. The building closed for two years for restoration.  10 WJAR

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Parade has named Providence as New England’s top foodie city today, praising eateries in each neighborhood including Irregardless Biscuit, Pizza Marvin, Oberlin, Al Forno and Gift Horse. The restaurants are noted for their unique dishes and local flair.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence Animal Control announced that Luna, a gentle lab mix with a black and white coat and sparkling chocolate eyes, is now available for adoption. Interested adopters can call (401-243-6040) to meet her today.  The Providence Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A commercial property on Branch Avenue in Providence recently sold for $4,673,059 as part of a set of real estate transactions compiled by The Warren Group LLC, with home sales reported across the state from Apr. 25 to Apr. 11.  The Providence Journal
  • The new owners of Providence Place say developer Joe Paolino is exploring a long-shot possibility of adding Costco, though no formal talks have begun (he plans to reach out to board members) as the project awaits local backing.  10 WJAR
  • James Diossa explained the RI AnchorHome program today, which will offer below-market rate mortgages to people earning up to 110% of the area's median income + help more families secure affordable housing.  The Providence Journal

  • Scottish fans in Providence rented 21 yellow school buses to move over 1,000 supporters to Gillette stadium for FIFA matches on June 13 and June 20 (cost per person is about $50) and will donate proceeds from Scotland merch sales to Hasbro Children’s Cancer hospital.  10 WJAR
  • Richard Sousa scored the game-winning goal with 2:54 left in overtime as Hendricken beat Pilgrim 11-10 on May 1 — an exciting finish that sealed a close match.  The Providence Journal
  • Smithfield girls lacrosse beat Ponaganset 13-3 on Thursday, Apr. 30 and kept their undefeated record while building momentum for the Division III playoffs (team chemistry drove their success).  The Providence Journal
