COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week, testimony from a key witness in the Karen Read trial was given in Norfolk Superior Court while an officer-involved shooting in Johnston left two hospitalized and a five-year-old nearly hit by a car in Attleboro. State regulators warned homeowners against contractor fraud—historic rides were auctioned as Edaville enters a new phase and a North Attleborough couple faces up to $400,000 in fines from an oil tank leak.  10 WJAR

CRIME NEWS

  • Police investigated a shooting on East Drive last night after finding a 29-year-old with a gunshot wound expected to survive— the suspect was later found on Hazael Street while one person in handcuffs was checked by EMS.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Providence Fire Department held a swearing-in and commencement ceremony Saturday, May 3 at Bishop McVinney Auditorium where firefighters were honored for their bravery and several first responders received medals for quick service. City leaders including Mayor Brett Smiley and Police Chief Oscar Perez attended the event to recognize the firefighters' dedication.  10 WJAR
  • Sen. Jack Reed honored 96-year-old Navy veteran Carmine Lombardi by presenting him with his earned World War II medals—such as the Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Lombardi, who served on the USS Little Rock and was discharged in 1947, later worked in the jewelry business.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 3, RIFC fans marched to Centreville Bank Stadium as part of the Defiance 1636 parade and started a game-day tradition as they moved from parking lots to the Pawtucket stadium.  The Providence Journal
  • On May 3, Rhode Island FC held its home opener at Centreville Bank Stadium—fans arrived hours early to enjoy free RIPTA shuttle rides and tailgating before the 4 p.m. kickoff against San Antonio FC. This event marked the first game played at the new venue.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island FC tied San Antonio FC 0-0 in their inaugural home game at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket on May 3 with over 10,700 fans watching—goalie Koke Vegas and midfielder Maxi Rodriguez made key saves to keep the score level. The club will face New England Revolution on May 7 as they build on this historic opening.  The Providence Journal
  • Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was removed in the bottom of the second inning on May 2nd after suffering a significant left knee injury during a game against the Minnesota Twins—he was taken off on a stretcher for further evaluation. The injury left the team with limited options at first base as they considered shuffling infield positions and calling up Triple-A players.  The Providence Journal
