ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, the Coast Guard reported that a barge carrying pilings nearly sank off the Rhode Island coast when its crew grounded it near Bonnet Shores to avoid taking on water, and it was dewatered Monday before being towed to a facility in Quonset for inspection.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • The owners of Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket appeared in court on Monday for violations including broken windows, cut utility wires, and graffiti that upset local residents.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Providence artist Eli Nixon installed a windsock art project last summer on Public Street near the port to call attention to local air quality levels. The installation uses colors (yellow for moderate, orange for unhealthy, red for hazardous) to signal real-time conditions and spur community action.  The Public's Radio
  • Today, Providence offers new itineraries that list places to stay, eat, and see the city's creative side. Developed by GoProvidence, the guides help visitors plan their local adventures.  Downtown Providence

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rhode Island gas prices jumped to $4.39 per gallon yesterday, an increase of 31 cents from last week. AAA Northeast attributed the rise to higher crude oil costs + global supply challenges affecting the market.  Go Local Prov

  • R.I. Kids Count published its annual Factbook today with five key statistics that highlight trends among children and families across the state. An event is hosted at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick this morning to review the report.  The Boston Globe
  • Brown University launched a new 16-month online master’s program in public policy designed for working professionals. The program (focusing on data-driven analysis and leadership skills) accepts applications now and will start in January.  Brown University
  • RISLA’s Executive Director Christine Rose Barlow announced new online programs to simplify college loan applications today in response to federal changes. The agency streamlined its process (now five minutes) and capped parent plus loans from $26,000 to $20,500 to help families.  Go Local Prov
  • Brown University scientists (in collaboration with NASA and local architects) have pitched bioARK, a lunar habitat design using algae panels and fungi to control temperature and produce food and raw materials. They plan to test the technology in low-Earth orbit within the next 12 to 15 months.  The Boston Globe

  • Rhode Island high school sports held a series of games on Monday, May 4 that kick-started the spring season. The Skippers edged Bay View-PCD in extra innings as teams like La Salle and Ponaganset recorded competitive wins (reflecting strong local play).  The Providence Journal
