  • A new Rhode Island KIDS COUNT report shows 16.3% of children live in poverty, with Newport at 32% due to high housing costs. Advocates call for more investment in childcare + workforce programs to improve mental health and education.  Rhode Island PBS

  • Tizzy K’s Cereal Ice Cream announced it will open its third shop in East Providence later this month at Newport Plaza near the Pawtucket line, and it will offer its popular rotating cereal milk flavors.  Downtown Providence
  • PVD marked the inaugural flight of Cabo Verde Airlines’ new international service on May 4 that connects Providence to Cabo Verde, a return of transatlantic service since 2019. Cabo Verde's Minister of Tourism and Transport said the flight aims to boost travel and cultural ties.  Go Local Prov

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • RIDEM has closed area 16E of the Lower Providence River (following a sewage discharge near the East Bay Bike Path that released about 800,000 gallons of untreated sewage on Wed, May 6). Water and shellfish testing will continue until the water is safe.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Senate approved a bill that lets National Guard members gift tuition benefits to an immediate family member (spouse or child) on May 6; the measure now heads to the House for review.  Downtown Providence
  • Providence filed a municipal court complaint on May 6 against Audubon Capital Partners for allegedly using an algorithm to set rental prices at two Innovation District buildings, 95 Lofts (95 Chestnut St.) and Chestnut Commons (180 Friendship St.). The initial court date is set for June 1.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown Health promised to keep Newport Hospital’s birthing center open if it secures $4.9M in state and philanthropic aid, prompting lawmakers led by Sen. Lou DiPalma to demand financial details at a Newport panel meeting today (amid funding concerns) while Representative Lauren Carson introduced a bill to split contributions equally.  Rhode Island PBS
