COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Firefighters, friends, and family gathered in Exeter on May 10 to honor the service and memory of Rhode Island firefighters lost in duty. Sen. Jack Reed—emphasizing the courage and sacrifice of those who served—attended the event along with Gov. Dan McKee.  ABC 6
  • The John E. Fogarty Foundation celebrated its 60th anniversary on May 10 by awarding a record $313,000 in grants to 47 nonprofits across Rhode Island—honoring the late Congressman Fogarty's work to improve healthcare and support programs for those with developmental disabilities.   • Emergency services in Southern New England are warning parents about the 'Chromebook Challenge' on TikTok, where children try to damage school-issued Chromebooks by short-circuiting components (which may cause fires, explosions, or toxic gas release).  ABC 6

CRIME NEWS

  • Officers said that on May 10th at 5:20 p.m. a man was injured in an altercation with a knife at 160 Broad Street and he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries—arrests have not been made as the investigation continues.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 10, new dragon boats were revealed in Providence during a ceremony led by Century Dragon Boat Club president Colleen Cranshaw. The event featured an eye dotting ritual to awaken the dragons' spirit — a symbol of protection and guidance that preceded a lion dance with live drums and cymbals.  Go Local Prov

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island Energy installed a 50-foot pole with a platform for osprey on May 10 on Kingstown Road in Narragansett after nearly 3,000 customers lost power, and the new nest – located five feet from the original – will help prevent future outages + provide a safe home for the birds.  10 WJAR

  • State Representative Patricia Serpa criticized rising healthcare CEO salaries amid layoffs at Providence Community Health Centers, saying the center’s CEO saw his compensation jump 47% from $421,180 to over $650,000—with many workers facing cuts.
